Important Characters of Santa Severina

Barone Gregorio di Barena appeared on Barena twenty years ago, during the Orc War. A mighy warrior, he helped turn the tides and save Santa Severina, before settling in as its lord. The Barone has always been reticent about his past, but this much is generally assumed. He was a minor noble from Sicania, probably a younger son in a large family who was not going to inherit anything. He made his own way in the world as a soldier of fortune. He became captain of his own company, and must have served in Crescentia, where he met his wife. He came to Barena with his company and helped defeat the orcs at the Battle of Santa Severina. Afterwards, he appointed himself lord, and built himself a castle on a hill overlooking the town. He hasn't been a particularly good lord, however, and there's lots of grumbling in the town. It hasn't progressed past that stage yet.

Baronessa Faziah di Barena is Gregorio's exotic Crescentian wife. The people of Santa Severina don't like her, because she's a foreigner, she keeps to herself, and (worst of all) she's a heretic who follows the Crescentian branch of the faith. Everyone knows she has expensive tastes, although no one knows exactly what they are.

Signora Andreana di Barena is the only child of Gregorio and Faziah. She's eighteen, and also standoffish towards the townsfolk. She's a student of the wizard Pisandro, however, which is impressive and a little intimidating.

Pisandro is the local wizard. He's been living in Santa Severina longer than most people can remember (although some of the oldest inhabitants can remember him moving to the island.) A lot of people feel that his magic is what actually turned the tide in the Orc War, and that Gregorio simply took credit for his victory. Pisandro lives in the highest tower of the Castello Barena with his apprentices. He is one of the Barone's chief advisors, when he can be bothered to come down. He also has a townhouse in Santa Severina, and a warehouse: Pisandro is quite rich from being a mercantile sponsor. A lot of people feel that he is actually the most powerful person in Santa Severina, or would be if he had any interest in power. But in truth, no one really knows what he wants.

Fra Carlo is the abbot at the Church of Santa Severina. He's also one of Barone Gregorio's advisors. The Church is a relatively new institution in Santa Severina, but everyone respects Fra Carlo for practicing what he preaches and having a good relationship with the followers of the old ways. It doesn't hurt that he's a local, either. Fra Carlo is a concilator who focuses on compromise and making sure the other community leaders have a working relationship.

Massimo is the other religious leader in town, who leads the old ways. He has a good working relationship with Fra Carlo, and as a result most people in town pay at least lip service to both faiths. (Better safe than sorry!) An older man, Massimo is respected and feared. He's more traditional, and is not afraid to challenge the Barone.

Galeno is the Captain of the Guard at Castello Barena. He's one of Gregorio's soldiers from the old days; most of the others died in the fighting, retired, or have moved on. He tends to follow orders and focus on his job, so most people in the town don't have much of an opinion about him: he's mildly disliked because of his loyalty to the Barone.
