Campaign Conversions: The Five Factions
Wizards of the Coast has released a series of very popular adventures for Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition. Each of these adventures is intended to be a shared experience for players around the world. While they are set in the Forgotten Realms, many of the adventures include notes on how to convert them to other worlds. Each of these adventures can be converted to Tirenia with only a few adjustments.
One of the biggest adjustments is one that affects almost every adventure released by Wizards of the Coast. For its Adventurers' League series, five factions have been created, who act as the players' patrons. Factions and patronage are extremely important in Tirenia. All of these five factions can be converted or replaced easily. Here are some suggestions for five iconic Tirenian factions to replace the five Faerunian factions.
The Emerald Enclave: Tirenia has been inhabited for a very long time. As a result, it does not have an environmental organisation that is the equivalent of the Emerald Enclave - any comparable organisation would be found in the hinterlands instead. However, there may be local allies instead. An elemental, or one of the fata, wields considerable supernatural power in their area. They may well have elves, lesser elementals, scholars, or other servitors who can provide more mundane assistance as well.
The Harpers: The Humanists are a loose collection of individuals across Tirenia with common goals: to overthrow the rule of the dragon princes. There are a very wide range of individuals who share these goals - condottieri, universita scholars, church leaders, artists and artisans, members of the nobility, and even some dragons! Because they are not a true faction, they do not have the same organised connections as some of the other factions. However, they are highly motivated to achieve their goals, or support those who are willing to fight and die for their beliefs.
The Lords' Alliance: The Tirenian League is a loose arrangement of the major powers in the subcontinent, dedicated to preserving peace and the status quo. Its main supporters are the blue dragons of Fiumenze, the silver dragons of Medilano, and the green dragons of the Church States, all of whom have a vested interest in preventing the bronze dragons of Staglia and the red dragons of Vanzenia from gaining power too much power and potentially conquering them. The Tirenian League has immense money and resources, and ambassadors in every major court in Tirenia.
The Order of the Gauntlet: The Church is the best stand-in for the Order of the Gauntlet. The Church has massive influence throughout all of Tirenia, and multiple powerful arms that it can bring to bear on any problem. The Inquisitori are dedicated to fighting the enemies of the faith. The Knights Austere are no more, but there are still some who remain to protect the church from their enemies.
The Zhentarim: The Benevoli, the syndicates of the black dragons control crime throughout all of southern Tirenia, and a sporadic presence throughout the rest of Tirenia as well. The black dragons consider themselves legitimate businessmen and community leaders, and act to protect 'their lands'.- though they may well look for how they would benefit in the process.
